Manhattan Liposuction & Fat Reduction FAQs

Can certain fat reduction treatments, such as tumescent liposuction, help you achieve a more sculpted figure?
Yes. Many of us maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. We eat well, exercise regularly, and treat ourselves well. Yet, despite our diligence, we can still be left with unwanted fat, discouraged by our inability to shape up problem areas. Today’s breakthrough cosmetic procedures can give us that extra edge. Highly effective in targeting specific areas with stubborn fat, these procedures have the added benefit of being minimally-invasive and little to no downtime.

Many procedures claim to help eliminate stubborn fat. What is meant by stubborn fat?
Stubborn fat generally refers to localized accumulations of fat, such as in the abdomen and hips. Unlike generalized fat deposits, these pockets of localized fat are not necessarily associated with being overweight or obese. In fact, they are highly resistant to diet or exercise, which can be frustrating. Advanced fat reduction treatments—ranging from improved liposuction techniques to laser and ultrasound technologies—are available to address stubborn fat.

What is unique about our doctor’s approach to fat reduction?
Our doctor, a New York-based cosmetic surgeon, has spent his career utilizing novel, minimally-invasive fat removal treatments. By integrating cutting-edge technologies into his everyday practice, our doctor can offer customized solutions.

What are some of the treatments that our doctor uses for fat removal?
At his fat treatment center in NYC, our doctor finely honed his expertise by using a variety of techniques, including:

  • Tumescent Liposuction. Minimally-invasive procedure that eliminates fat by suction.
  • SmartLipo MPX™. Laser technology that melts fat and tightens skin.
  • Liposonix and VASER® LipoSelection. Two different devices that use ultrasound energy to destroy fat cells.
  • CoolSculpting. “Fat freezing” technology that induces the body to eliminate excess fat cells.

Our doctor specializes in tumescent liposuction, a medical procedure done under local anesthesia. By integrating the use of laser and ultrasound technologies into his tumescent technique, he gives more precise results, while minimizing patient discomfort.

What happens during a tumescent liposuction procedure?
The procedure lasts about 2 to 3 hours. First, our doctor injects saline solution (consisting of a local anesthetic and a capillary constrictor) into the treatment area, which causes it to swell. The liquid swelling helps to facilitate fat removal. Next, a hollow, stainless steel tube, or microcannula, which is connected to a suction pump, is inserted into the fat. The fat is then removed by suction. After the procedure, a compression garment is placed on the treated area to help healing and minimize bruising.

Why does our doctor integrate advanced technology, such as devices that use laser and ultrasound, into a tumescent technique?
By introducing state-of-the art technology into his practice, our doctor can give precision treatments. Devices, such as the Liposonix, VASER LipoSelection and SmartLipo, emit sound and light energy. This energy produces heat which, in turn, dissolves fat on contact. When suction is applied, the dissolved fat can be more efficiently removed. Moreover, the use of microcannulas in the tumescent technique gives our doctor greater control in the procedure, leading to even smoother results. Because all of the techniques can be performed under local anesthesia, the downtime is minimized.

When can I resume normal activities after tumescent liposuction?
Most patients can return to work and their daily activities two days after having tumescent liposuction. During the initial week of recovery, our doctor recommends light activity, such as short walks. After a week, patients are normally able to resume routine exercise.

What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® uses a cooling technology to freeze fat cells in a treatment area. Once the fat cells are frozen, they die and the body eliminates them. Because the ‘fat freezing’ technology can effectively target and freeze fat cells only, no other tissue is damaged. The treatment lasts about an hour, after which patients can resume normal activities immediately. Cool Sculpting is a gradual process and it takes about four months to see the full effects of the procedure.

Are the results from these minimally-invasive procedures long-lasting?
They can be, provided the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle, with the proper diet and exercise.

Who is a good candidate for the fat removal procedures our doctor offers?
Our doctor recommends tumescent liposuction and other treatments—such as SmartLipo MPX™, Liposonix, VASER® LipoSelection, and CoolSculpting— for those who are looking to lose that extra inch, but find that diet and exercise don’t work. None of the treatments are meant to be a weight loss solution. Good candidates are generally healthy and want to remove excess fat, without the pain and downtime of surgery. For individuals with realistic expectations and who are not seeking a weight loss solution, these minimally-invasive treatments may help achieve their ideal shape.
